UK Study Visas for Short Summer Courses: What Parents Need to Know

Why "Student Visa" usually isn't the right route
The UK's Student visa (and Child Student visa) is designed for young people enrolling at a UK school or university for a full academic term or year. Most of our summer courses run for 1 to 6 weeks, well under six months, so they typically fall under a different, shorter route instead.
The two routes that usually apply
Short-term study route
Covers courses of up to 6 months for some nationalities, intended for exactly this kind of short residential English or academic course.
Standard Visitor route (studying as a visitor)
Many nationalities can attend a short course of this kind under the standard visitor rules, which also cover tourism, provided the course does not exceed the permitted length for study as a visitor.
Which of these applies, and whether your child needs to apply for anything in advance at all, depends entirely on their nationality. Some nationalities need no visa at all for a visit of this length; others need to apply in advance.
What we ask for either way
Regardless of the exact route, UK schools and our own team typically ask for:
- A valid passport, valid for the whole stay.
- Confirmation of the course dates and the school's own acceptance/confirmation letter.
- A signed letter from a parent or guardian confirming consent for the trip and naming the group leader or host responsible for the student.
- Proof that the family can cover the cost of the trip, this varies by nationality and by whether the parent is employed, self-employed or retired.
